It all began in 1993 with the opening of the Isle of Palms Connector bridge, which provided an important link between the island and the rest of the Charleston area. The IOP Run and Walk for the Child is now entering its 19th year and going strong. Last year, more than 1,400 racers participated in the event.
This year, the connector will close to traffic at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2011. The race begins at the foot of the bridge in the Isle of Palms, and participants will make their way into Mt. Pleasant. The race features a 5K route and a 10K route. Both groups will finish back at the Isle of Palms at JC Long Boulevard. The event wraps up with a post-race celebration festival geared toward families.
The event is a collaboration of the Isle of Palms and Mt. Pleasant town governments and exchange clubs. Money raised by the race goes to support local child-abuse-prevention and other youth-related programs.
If you are already registered for the event, you may pick up your race packet at the IOP Exchange Club Building the day before the race (until 7:00 p.m.), or at the Isle of Palms Public Safety Building on the day of the race (between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.). Do be aware that waiting until the day of the race to get your packet will likely mean you’ll have to wait in a long line. If you are not yet signed up and want to participate, late registration is available at the IOP Exchange Club building on Friday, September 30, 2011, or on the day of the race at the public safety building.

Registration is now open for the 20th Annual Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child. We want to invite those with an interest in fitness, health, family and community to join. Our race offers a 5k run, 5k walk and a 10k run with one of the most scenic views in the South. All funds raised go directly to local organizations for the prevention of child abuse right here in Charleston. Come and support our cause; then enjoy the entertainment the follows including: live bands, children’s fun and our first beer garden.
